Vishal Sinha, a travel professional for nearly 30 years, turns to the kitchen as he launches We The Chefs, an aggregator of home chefs in Gurgaon.
A travel professional, who’s been part of the industry across companies and positions,
finally decided to give in to his passion for food and We The Chefs, a an aggregator of home chefs in Gurgaon. “I have always been passionate about food and liked to experiment with food wherever I travelled,” he says, explaining his jump from a hardcore corporate life to the food business.
Sinha, who spent around three decades in the travel and aviation industry, heading the regional business of British Airways in various markets including Japan,COO of TUI India, and finally as CEO of CWT India recently, went on to say that he feels the need for people to connect with good food, and the room for it in the market. “Our endeavour is to connect people with good food.”
Sinha says that the company also intends to motivate the home chefs to help “rediscover the lost recipes and the lost cuisines.” Sinha feels that the latter cannot be expected from the run-of-the-mill restaurants. We The Chefs has over 100 home chefs listed on the platform and has received good traction since its launch in March 2022. “We will have our app ready in the next 40 to 45 days,” he said.
We The Chefs’ emphasis is on delivering experiences around authentic and flavoursome home cooked food in a consistent manner. Sinha adds that the agenda is to also motivate the home chefs to excel in what they do and help them find the right market for their food.
The platform has created an experience and deliver the home cooked food in Gurgaon where “chef’s table” are organised as per demand. The facility has a capacity to host 10 to 12 people for a curated meal.
“The experience centre helps the home chefs to showcase their class and calibre. Our ultimate aim is to churn out at least a few ‘stars’ from our pool of home chefs and motivate them to go beyond what they do now,” he explains.
The home chefs on the platform are FSSAI-certified and follow the standards of safety and hygiene. We The Chefs also helps them to upskill in terms of their knowledge in terms of plating, presentation, etc. There is also a customer rating mechanism that helps the chef community to respond positively to customer feedback and bring in changes if required.
And as far as delivery is concerned, Sinha said that currently it is being handled by the company itself, but they are in talks with a couple of companies for last mile delivery.
Sinha goes on to add that they have a robust technology support system that will help them to expand faster to newer areas. We The Chefs has their plans ready to expand to at least four more cities – Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai and Pune – by the end of the year – not to mention that they also plan to add at least one experience centre in every city that they venture into.
Although bootstrapped, Sinha is quite excited about the traction the startup has generated, and says that he would look to raise capital from the market sooner than later to take that growth momentum forward.
“It was a tough call to try something different after being in the corporate world for almost 30 years. I have taken a bungee jump and am in the free fall stage now, but enjoying it as well,” he signs off.
